Funding

Each year the Undergraduate Student Government is pleased to provide funding for undergraduates and student-run organization. This year, the Undergraduate Student Government is proud to provide over $300,000 for students and their organizations that seek to make a difference on campus. Students and recognized student organizations can apply to receive funds from the following funding sources:

USG Discretionary Board | USG Leadership Fund | USG Philanthropy Fund| USG Professional Fund| USG Academic Reseach Fund | USG Capital Group Funding Board

Also the USG Capital Group Funding Board, which can offer loans to student organization for their fundraising events, can offer loans to student organizations for their fundraising events.

Organizations and individuals can apply for Senate Allocation funds for further fiscal needs.

USG Discretionary Board

The USG Discretionary Board was established to fund programming events that are campus wide and that do not fall under the other found funding boards. It is the board's goal to sponsor events which are entertaining, cultural, and/or educational which cater to the entire student body. Student organizations may apply for up to $4100 per semester. In order to receive funding the student organization must be officially recognized and the proposed event must occur on campus.

Examples of 2008-2009 projects:

Troy Philippines - The Mabuhay Festival
Funded the lighting, audio equipment and stage for the Phillipno Mabuhay Fesitival.

Chamber Opera of USC - The Daily Grind
Funded the venue, the sanctuary and the performers for the unique opera show on coffee.)

USC Nikkei Association - USC Nikkei Culture Show Night
Funded Bovard Auditorium for Nikkei's Annual Culture Show.

Alpha Delta Chi - Java Jive
Funded flyer and venue costs for Java Jive - a night of learning different types of dances

Unity Through Sports - Start-up Funds
Funded sporting equipment for this first year organization

USG Leadership Fund

The USG Leadership Fund provides support for student organizations engaging in leadership development and recognition. Among the items funded in past years are attendance at conferences, seminars, and workshops; organization of leadership retreats; and awards for leadership.Student organizations may apply for up to $3,500 of funding in a single academic year.

Examples of 2008-2009 projects:

National Society of Black Engineers - NSBE National Convention 2007
Funded registration fees and hotel expenses to attend the convention at the Microsoft Corporate Campus in Redmond, WA.

Marshall Green Business Association - Opportunity Green Conference
Funded registration fees for members to attend the conference

Parkside Arts & Humanities Government - PAHRC Government Retreat
Funded hotel rooms and meeting room facilities to conduct a leadership retreat.

USC Peer Mediation - Peer Mediation Training 2009
Funded registration for new members training in mediation skills to resolve conflicts on campus

USC Model United Nations - Los Angeles Model UN Conference @ UCLA
Funded registration fees for USC Model UN to represent and delegate for a foreign country at a three-day conference

USG Philanthropy Fund

The USG Philanthropy Fund seeks to sponsor “hands-on” community service events which create a beneficial partnership between the University and the greater community. Additionally, it is the mission of this committee to encourage student organizations to work together to maximize philanthropic opportunities throughout the university. Student organizations are eligible to receive up to $5,408 in a given academic year for their projects.

Examples of 2008-2009 projects:

Rites of Sisterhood Youth Mentoring Organization - Rites of Sisterhood Weekly Session
Funded EVK brunches every Saturday from January 24 – April 25

USC Helenes - Jr. Helenes
Funded food and supplies for weekly mentoring program from February 4 – May 13

Norman Topping Community - EGGSTER - Spring Egg Hunt and Learning Festival
Funded easter eggs and inflatables for event

Going for the Goal - Going for the Goal Mentoring Program
Funded training manuals, student manuals and food for recognition ceremony

USG Professional Fund

The USG Professional Fund provides funding for events sponsored by campus organizations that give students the opportunity to meet professionals in various fields.

Examples of 2008-2009 projects:

New/North Cinema Floor Group - Ed Wood Film Festival
Funded LA Party Rentals: red carpet runner, pedestal cocktail tables, table clothes, 10' pole light with pink gels, table for serving food.

Alpha Epsilon Delta - Southland Pre-Health Conference
Funded the set-up, staff, opening costs, venue, AV equipment, and parking of the Davidson Conference Center

Latino Business Student Association - Corporate Luncheon
Funded Town and Gown venue rental

Association of Integrated Marketing - Food Marketing Night
Funded food from Pasta Roma and gifts for panel speakers

Marshall Business Student Government - Resume Day
Funded tables, chairs, umbrellas, tablecloths, delivery, fliers, posters, sandwiches, water, soda, and thank you gifts.

USG Academic Research Fund

The USG Academic Research Fund was establish to provide undergraduates with funding to conduct research projects, attend academic conferences and pursue other academic extracurricular activities.

Sarah Hawley ‘10 - Studying the Figurines of Tell al-Judaidah
Funded student’s flight to Chicago so she could study ancient figurines at the University of Chicago

Albedo (Undergraduate Geography Club) - Trip to the AAG Annual Research Conference
Funded travel fees to Las Vegas and registration fees

Shannon Ward ‘09 - Trip to Russia and Uzbekistan to study totalitarian propaganda
Funded student's flight to Moscow so that she could study the propaganda in Russia and Uzbekistan for her Senior Honors Thesis

Alexandrea Gayda ‘09 - Trip to El Salvador to oversee elections and conduct interviews
Funded student's travel and lodging costs in El Salvador so that she could help oversee elections there as well as conduct interviews for her research project in a Journalism class

USG Capital Group Funding Board
Partners: Ashwin Appiah, Chairman

The mission of the USG Capital Group is to empower student life at the University of Southern California by financing student organization efforts to raise money. Existing USG funding boards are barred from dispersing funds to fundraising events and events that charge admission. The USG Capital Group can offer loans to student organization fundraisers, provide seed money to student organization ventures in exchange for equity stakes in those ventures, and advise student organizations in pursuit of raising money. Individual student organizations are eligible for up to $1000 of capital at a tieme in the form of a loan or seed money.
